I agree the general approach of translating queries that return graphs to multiple queries (probably in the same batch) instead of flattening them into a single query with JOINS would make a set of scenarios more efficient. This is not something we are planning to tackle in the short term, but I believe it is worth making sure we have it hear in the backlog.
